(논문요약)[목적] 영화에 대한 트뤼포의 영화세계와 논리적인 의견은 영화가 상업으로만 제시되고 있는 오늘날 모든 영화인들에게 나아갈 방향을 제시하리라는 점에 그 목적을 둔다. (영문초록)[영문초록]Truffaut who said 'the film of tomorrow seems to me even more personal than a novel, individual and autobiographical, like a confession or a private diary' is a leading man of the New Wave that was a film movement arising out of a dissatisfaction with traditional aethetics rather than with traditional politics or with the structure of society. The first chapter is focused on the motivation and the methods of this study. The aim of this thesis is to study the course of Truffaut's development from 'cine´phile' to 'cine´aste' and significance of his achievements as an auteur in film history. For this study I used all kinds of materials; texts, documents, his writings as well as his films and criticism.In the second chapter I researched his domestic and social environment which influenced his growing as an auteur and the background forming his critical thought. Through the world warII, Truffaut had tried to make up for his neglected mind caused from his unhappy domestic life and social unrest in the film theatre. Writing for the Paris film journal Cahiers du Cine´ma, Truffaut made a habitof attacking the most artistically respected French filmmakers of the day. The most remarkable document in this regard is the attack on the Classic French film, 'Une Certain Tendance du Cine´ma Franc¸ais', which appeared in Cahiers du Cine´ma in January, 1954. The article was essentially a fierce attack on the 'Tradition de la Qualite' which was prevailing about that time. The tradition which gave the central creative role to the literary men- notably Aurenche and Bost- whose works were mainly the adaptation of quality novels, leaving to the director the secondary role of implementing their scenarios. In fact, the French postwar films that were adapted from novels and heavily dependent upon plot and dialogue. The characteristics of 'Tradition of Quality' attacked by Truffaut are as follows: l) psychological realism transformed from poetic realism. 2) adaptation written by literary men. 3) refined technique. 4) using professional adaptator. In opposition to this, Truffaut proposed 'Le Cine´ma L'Auteur' where the creative role was given to the director as an auteur who infused prsonal style and cinematic imagination into cliched materials and brought it into distinctive life on the screen. I think that his central view about 'Le Cine´ma d'Auteur' contains spirit of A. Astruc's Camera stylo formed from the existentialism of the day. Truffaut couldn't be satisfied only by film criticism. After making a couple of short films, he made his first feature film, 'Les 400 coups' in 1959 that won the Grand Prize at the Cannes Film Festivals. Since then he became a film director instead of a film critic. The third chapter research his personal characteristics appearing in the process of creating films. The theme of his works was almost based on the world he had experienced. He always wrote his scenarios and adapted novels he liked by himself. Therefore, All his films reflect his own view. And they are the realization of his thought about 'La Politique d'Auteur'. In the act of true artistic creation, film made collectively is more uncertain and vulnerable in the cinema than elsewhere. Nevertheless, I think Truffaut proposed more concretely the way film has to go to as the work of art in theory and practice.
