(논문요약)[목적] 본 연구에서는 CC의 장점을 이용한 영어 교수, 학습 방법을 개발, 활용함으로써 영어에 대한 흥미를 높여 학습자의 듣기 능력을 향상시키고자 하는데 있으며, 영화의 캡션을 주도한 학습도구로 수업시간에 활용하는 듣기에 중점을 둔 수업모형을 제시하고자 한다. 또한 캡션 영화를 통한 듣기 능력 향상을 위한 효과적인 대안으로 인터넷을 활용하여 수업매체를 이용할 수 있는 방안을 제시하고자 한다. (영문초록)[영문초록] The purpose of this study is to develop the method of improving students' English listening ability through closed captioning, the process by which audio portions of a program are transcribed into written words that appear on the screen at the same time as the program. Despite the fact that closed captioning technology was originally devised for the benefit of dead and hard-of-hearing people, this technology has spread widely among ESL/EFL students as a language learning tool. Closed-captioning provide an opportunity for students to read what they have just heard or to hear what they see as a check or reinforcement of listening comprehension. From the perspective of movie, the advantages of using captioned movies in English class as follows: 1) movies offer authentic language and context, 2) movies show real life in the aspect of culture, 3) movies encourage students expand their interest gained in class to independent learning, 4) movies activate students' sense of empathy, which make possible to understand the context effectively, 5) movies lower students' affective filters, which is one of important factors in foreign language learning. There are many ways to use captioned movies, such as VHS, CD-ROM, and DVD. In this study I suggest one way to use captioned movies through Internet. Internet is a valuable tool for language learning and several P2P(peer-to peer) Internet services provide many films for English teachers. Based on the fact that using captioned movies in English classroom is a good way to improve students' English skills, specially listening skill, this study makes the following suggestions in using caption. First, a careful selection of movies must be made in consideration of their content and the difficulty level of language used in movies. One must remember that not all movies or screenplays are suitable for all language classes. Second, captions may contain one or two lines of text, depending on the scenes and the number of speakers. The rate at which captioning appears depends on the speaker's pace and the type of scene. On average, the rate between 100 and 120 words per minute should be taken into consideration in classroom. Finally, when using captioned movies in English class, the most important thing is the teachers' role.
