(논문요약)[목적] 본 논문은 영화와 소설의 유사점과 차이점, 그리고 각색에 따른 여러가지 문제점들을 알아보고, 나아가서 "영화와 소설의 경계선 상에 있는 작가"로 간주되고 있고, '일반 대중과 학계를 동시에 만족시킨 드문 작가들 중의 하나"이며 따라서 그의 대부분의 작품이 영화화된, 어네스트 헤밍웨이의 작품을 통하여 그 문제들을 구체적으로 밝혀 보기로 하겠다. 즉, 헤밍웨이의 작품세계를 고찰해 보고, 이 작가의 작품이 영화화됨에 있어서 그 작품세계가 어떻게 보존되고, 어떻게 변형되었는지, 그리고 변형이 이루어졌다면 그 원인은 무엇인지에 대해서 소설과 영화의 세부적인 비교를 통해서 살펴보기로 하겠다. (영문초록)[영문초록] Both the novel and the motion picture grew up as modes of entertainment. To a large extent both still are such, but they offer wide differences in the transmission of meaning. Precisely, an art whose limits depend on a moving image, mass audience, and industrial production is bound to differ from an art whose limits depend on language, a limited audience and individual creation. In short, the filmed novel, in spite of certain resemblances, will inevitably become a different artistic entity from the novel on which it is based. This paper is intended to know what is kept, what is thrown out, what is transformed and how in making screen versions of novels by Ernest Hemingway, who was called a borderline case between the two media and one of the rare writers whose fiction appealed both to the general public and to the gatekeepers of the academy, such as A Faremell to Arms, For Whom the Bell Tolls, and a short story of his, The Snows of Kilimanjaro. It comes to the conclusion that the resulting film can never be a replica of the novel or short story from which it was derived, for a work of art conceived in terms of the techniques of one medium always resists to some extent conversion into another medium ; but the adapter telling the story in the new medium can, for all of that, preserve the original author's thematic intent and personal vision. In the short run, a good adaptation should result in restoration of the essence of the letter and the spirit.
