(논문요약)[국문초록]<26년>을 처음 접하고 지난 4년간의 과정 속에서 필자는 때로는 한 작품의 프로덕션디자이너에서 한편으로는 사회적 문제작의 연출자로 그 책임을 다 하려고 노력하였다. 4년여 간의 시간 속에서 단 한 번도 원활하게 투자가 이루어지지 않았던 작품이 2012년 말에 있었던‘대선’이라는 사회적인 환경에서 일반 시민 일만 오천 명의 투자유치를 불과 두 달 만에 끌어낸 것은 본 영화가 다분히 정치적인 위치에 놓여있으며 그렇게 이용하기 좋은 화두를 품고 있어서이다. 필자는 위의 이유로 또는 그 반대의 이유로‘누구나 볼 수 있는’영화를 만들기 위해 최선을 다 했다. 최선을 다 하기 위해서 잘 모르는 것, 부족한 것을 메꾸고 채우기 보다는 필자의 장점과 잘 하는 것을 보다 더 잘 하기 위한 선택과 집중을 하였다. 그 고민과 노력의 결과로 애니메이션의 도입을 들 수 있겠으며 원작을 벗어나야만 했던 각 종 설정과 그 판단의 과정 그리고 결과물이 바로 그것이다. 프로덕션디자인은 배우나 촬영에 앞선 고민이어야 하며 또한 상업영화를 만드는 연출자에게 있어 예산을 어떻게 효율적으로 운용하는지 연구하는 것이다. 예술가라는 명분아래 유보하거나 회피했던 이런 고민들이 실질적으로는 연출자에게 또 다른 표현의 자유를 줄 수 있다는 확신이 있다. 본 제작 보고서의 특징은 한 영화가 프로덕션 디자이너 출신의 연출자를 만났을 때 그 짧은 시간과 적은 비용을 가지고 어떻게 만들어질 수 있는지에 대한 고민과 과정을 충실히 담으려고 노력했으며 그것에 특화된 연구 보고서이다. (영문초록)[영문초록]For the duration of four years since I first became involved in the production of the film <26 Years>, I have taken responsibility for investing continuing effort into the production as a production designer, to begin with, and, eventually, as the director of the controversial project. Under the socio-political situation expecting forthcoming presidential election in 2012, this film, that had seen repeated failure in securing funding for four years, succeeded in drawing an unexpected number of 15,000 general public investing into the production in less than 2 months. Political issues embedded in the story and politically-employable disposition of the production are deemed to be the key factors that have made this remarkable public-funding event possible. For the reasons above, or for the opposite, my top priority was to make a film that can be seen by anyone and everyone. In order to pull the best out of what I could achieve, I opted for carefully selecting and focusing on my strengths rather than trying to compensate for the week points. The outcome of this decision-making process includes introducing animated sequences and making modifications to the narrative settings of the original work that the film is based on. Production design is what must be carefully considered prior to plans for cinematography or casting. It is also central to effective budgeting and allocation of resources for anyone directing a commercial film. The matter of production design and budgeting, which has often been left unconfronted under the name of the‘art’, will be of assistance to directors in achieving their goals cinematically. This is a production report on the subject of how a film was directed by a former production designer tackling issues of both time constraint and limited budget.
