(영문초록)[영문초록]This thesis aims to investigate how modern cinema uses non-linearity that creates new episteme, by analysing Fight Club(1999), Donnie Darko(2001) and Children of Men(2006). Since Gilles Deleuze?s philosophical analyses of modern cinema, the non-linear narrative and style emerged not only as the breakthrough from structuralist epistemology but also as a way to prove that cinema is a better genre for non-segmental philosophy than any other art genre. Obviously, cinema is more industrial than any other art genre. Having said that though, the true essence of cinema lies on its artistic value. In that sense, a differentiated value of cinema can be found in the non-linearity of style and narrative. The non-linearity appears in different ways in each film. First, Fight Club uses the subliminal effect which forces the audience to see something irrelevant in the linear sensorimotor scheme. And this effect results in unsettles by making it uncertain whether the narrator is reliable or not. Thus, the images of this subliminal effect act as violence along with the hand-to-hand fights in the Fight Club. The unnamed narrator of Fight Club is a schizophreniac whose voice is split into two characters, himself and Tyler Durden. Two characters are aware of the narrative in which they are. And they even comment on the narrative structure by mentioning narrative strategies and characters themselves. As a result, it becomes tricky to distinguish the real narrator and to draw a boundary line between reality and fantasy. This feature of ambiguous narration resembles the rhizome structure of Deleuze and Guattari. Contrary to traditional tree structure that came from the ancient Greek philosophy, every element in Fight Club branches out and unites into a knot at the same time. And this rhizomatic narrative structure creates lines of flight that give the audience non-linear episteme. Secondly, in terms of order of incidents, Donnie Darko?s narrative is quite causal and linear, compared to most of time travel films. In Donnie Darko, however, it seems that another subject outside of the screen manipulates the narrative by giving orders to Donnie. The intruding voice arouses the audience from typical linear thought process to look on the reverse side of their memories. In so doing, it expresses wish or will to remedy tragedies in the past. The most important feature of Donnie Darko is its circulative narrative. Like M?bius strip, the order of the incident in this film rotates endlessly. The cause of an incident becomes the result of it and vice versa. And this circulative narrative brings about incompossibility which appears between inverse causalities. The incompossibility of Donnie Darko is very close to the essence of non-linear episteme in modern cinema. Finally, a key feature of Children of Men is long-take. As a contrary concept to montage editing that drives the audience into a definite message produced in human linguistic way, long-take allows the audience to find or translate the individual meanings from the screen. In the sense of multiple layers of meanings like in Orson Welles?s Citizen Kane, long-takes in Children of Men deliver many messages at the same time on the screen. And the audience happen to discover that the background is as important as the foreground or the protagonists. Along with documentary-like camera view, long-takes of Children of Men make the audience focus on every details on the screen. When the audience, overaccustomed to soft-focus and rapid editing, see long-take sequences in Children of Men, they feel as if their sight suddenly get caught in one scene. This effect cuts the sequence loose of the linear montages, and forces the audience to perceive a disparate reality detached from linear and narrow narrative.
