(논문요약)[국문초록]한스 짐머(Hans Zimmer)는 지난 30년간 100여 편의 영화에서 음악을 담당했으며, 아카데미(Academy Award)와 골든 글로브(Golden Globe Award), 그래미(Grammy Award)를 비롯해 전 세계 영화제에서 수많은 노미네이트(nominate)와 수상 기록을 가지고 있는 오늘날 영화 산업계에서 가장 신뢰받는 작곡가 중 한명이다. 이 논문은 한스 짐머의 주요 작품들 중 그의 음악적 특징이 두드러지게 나타나는 액션 및 전쟁영화를 중심으로 그의 음악적 독자성이라 할 수 있는 리듬에 대해 연구한다. 서론에서는 한스 짐머의 음악적 독자성을 리듬에서 찾는 배경을 살펴보고, 본 논문에서 다루는 그의 주요 작품들의 범위를 선정하며, 리듬 연구에 앞서 리듬에 대한 정의와 연구에 사용할 리듬 분석 방법에 대해 설명한다. 또한, 한스 짐머의 전기에 대해 보다 자세히 알아보고, 주요 작품들에 대한 영화적, 음악적 연구 배경에 대해 살펴본다. 본론에서는 <인셉션(Inception), <라스트 사무라이(Last Samurai)>, <셜록 홈즈(Sherlock Holmes)>, <크림슨 타이드(Crimson Tide)>, <씬 레드 라인(The Thin Red Line)> 등 총 5편의 OST(Original Soundtrack)에 수록된 주요 곡들의 리듬 분석을 통해 한스 짐머 음악의 리듬적 특징을 알아보며, 그의 영화 음악 레이블인 리모트 콘트롤 프로덕션(Remote Control Production)에 속한 다른 작곡가들의 주요 작품과 비교, 분석을 통해 이러한 리듬적 특징의 유사성을 찾아본다. 본 연구를 통해 나타난 한스 짐머 음악의 리듬적 특징은 다음과 같다. 첫 번째, 동기를 이루는 기본 요소로 연속된 짧은 박자의 리듬을 사용하며 이 리듬은 오스티나토(ostinato) 형식으로 반복된다. 두 번째, 업 비트(upbeat)에서 연속되는 타악기의 리듬을 사용하여 다음 박자에 나오는 온 비트(on-beat)를 강조한다. 세 번째, 폴카(polka) 리듬과 유사한 메인 멜로디의 리듬, ‘강박-약박’으로 빠르게 반복되는 2박자 느낌의 리듬 등 남성적인 군악 행진곡과 유사한 리듬을 자주 사용한다. 네 번째, 동기를 구성하는데 있어서 영화의 시공간적 배경이 되는 악기들을 사용한다. 다섯 번째, 한 곡의 동기를 다른 곡의 동기를 구성하는 일부분으로 사용하여 악곡 간에 리듬적 통일성을 주었으며, 이러한 방식을 통해 하나의 리듬의 점진적인 발전을 표현한다. 마지막으로 동기의 전반부에서는 리듬감을 더하고, 후반부에서는 덜하는 형식을 주로 사용한다. 한스 짐머의 리듬적 독자성은 현대 영화 음악에 큰 영향을 끼쳤다. 이러한 그의 독자적인 리듬 스타일과 영화 음악을 위한 노력은 보다 깊게 연구되어야 할 가치가 있다. (영문초록)[영문초록]Hans Zimmer is one of the finest composers in the film industry today. He concentrated his work especially on composing music for film and continues to receive top music awards, including the Academy, Golden Globe, and Grammy awards. This thesis researches his unique rhythmic characteristics in action and war films, a center element for the worldwide popularity of his music. In the first part of this thesis it is explained why rhythm should be researched in identifying Hans Zimmer's unique music style. Further the analysis method applied is described and Zimmer's rhythmic characteristics are defined. His biography and some background of this study are mentioned additionally. The main part of this thesis analyzes and identifies the rhythmic characteristics of five of Zimmer's key original sound tracks which are “Inception”, “Last Samurai”, “Sherlock Holmes”, “Crimson Tide”, and “The Thin Red Line”. After thorough analysis of their rhythmic characteristics the results are being compared with the music of other film composers attached to the Remote Control Productions, Zimmer's film music label. The rhythmic characteristics of Hans Zimmer's film scores that came forth in this thesis can be summarized as follows: First, a continuous rhythm of short-beats is the basic element of motive work and is repeated in ostinato form. Second, the rhythmical use of consecutive percussion moments on the upbeat emphasizes the following downbeat. Third, the rhythm of the main melody is similar to the polka, referring to the two-beat rhythm which repeats ‘oom-pah’ and comparable to the masculinity of military music as well. Fourth, the instruments related to the film's spatio-temporal background are used to configure a motive rhythm. Fifth, the motives of one score are used in partly in other score's motives. This adds unity and a sense of progressive development between the scores. Finally, the rhythm of the opening motive of a film score is repeatedly increased in impact, and later applied in a reduced format. Zimmer's unique rhythmic identity influenced not only the tone of modern film music, but also the development of the film industry as we know it today. Zimmer's lifetime film music endeavor deserves tremendous respect and is worth of further study to deepen the knowledge of his rhythmic style and contribution.
