(논문요약)[국문] 영상 매체 중 하나인 영화는 감독 자신의 작품을 빛과 색을 이용하여 관객 에게 스토리를 전달하는 가장 강렬한 인상을 주는 시각적 표현으로 색채를 스크린을 통해 가장 먼저 보게 된다.색채는 스토리 전개를 암시하고 시대 적 배경,극중 인물의 직업,성격,심리 등 영화의 특성을 표현해 주는 중요 한 정보이며,감독들은 상징적 의미를 표현하는 요소인 색채에 큰 관심을 가지고 있다. 약 1000년 동안 허리를 강조하기 위해 입었던 코르셋이 사라지고,전쟁으 로 인해 여성들이 사회진출을 함으로써 복식의 간편화,최소화하는 현대복 식의 전환점이 되는 시기로써 1920년대 복식에 대한 연구의 필요성이 있다. 이러한 복식 요소들을 작가 ‘F.Scott Fitzgerald’의 소설 <위대한 개츠비>를 통해 1920년대 복식뿐만 아니라,사회와 문화를 잘 묘사하고 있다. 연구의 목적으로는 <위대한 개츠비>의 복식에 나타난 색채와 색의 상징 성의 상관관계를 도출하고,영화의상 연구를 하는데 목적이 있다. 1920년대 미국사회를 그대로 보여주고 있는 ‘F.Scott Fitzgerald’의 소설 <위대한 개츠비>는 헤어졌던 연인을 다시 만나고자 매일 밤 호화로운 파 티를 열어 상위 계층의 복식을 잘 보여주는 영화이다.상류계층과 하류계층 간의 갈등과 유흥,범죄,음란하고 타락된 사람들을 보여주며 시끄럽고 어 지러운 불안한 모습의 1920년대 미국의 ‘라스트 제너레이션’모습과 ‘아메리 칸 드림’에 대한 탐구가 예리하고 섬세하게 잘 그려진 작품으로 ‘바즈 루어 만’감독의 <위대한 개츠비:The Great Gatsby 2013>에 등장하는 5명의 인물을 각 2001년,1974년 작품과 비교분석하고 색의 상징성에 대한 연구를 진행하였고,설문조사를 통해 대중들이 인식하는 등장인물의 색채 이미지 연상에 대해 알아보았다. 본 연구는 원작 소설 <위대한 개츠비>를 비주얼 화 시킨 2013년,1974년 에 개봉한 영화와,2001년 TV용 영상과 설문조사를 기준으로 색채추출과 색채이미지 분석을 해보고,이들의 공통점을 발견해 보았다. 연구의 분석 방법은 원작 소설을 기승전결 형식의 4장구조로 재구성하 였고,소설에 명시된 복식의 조형성을 등장인물별로 3편의 영상을 비교분 석해 보았다.‘L*a*b*’ 값과 KS 계통색명을 통해 컬러 데이터베이스를 만 들고, 설문조사를 통해 색의 상징성 이론과 비교분석을 통해 결론을 입증 하였다. 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 등장인물 ‘닉 캐러웨이’는 글의 화자 역할로 다른 등장인물과 조화를 이루는 역할로 주조색인 갈색과 남색의 상징적 이미지와 일치하였다. 남자 주인공인 ‘제이 개츠비’는 원작 소설 속에 명 시된 색채를 3편의 영상에서 모두 그대로 재현하여 복식에 상징적 의미를 부여한 것을 알 수 있었다. 남자 주인공과 대조 인물인 ‘탐 뷰캐넌’은 2013년 영상에서 어두운 톤으로 표현되고 있는 것과 달리 2001,1974년 영 상에서는 영화의 배경이 여름이라는 특수성으로 대부분의 복식이 밝은 회 색 톤으로 상징성과는 무관하게 표현된 것을 알 수 있었다. 여자 주인공 ‘데이지 뷰캐넌’은 사랑스럽고 로맨틱한 이미지를 부각시킨 연한 색조의 드레스를 착용한 것을 알 수 있었으며, 2001년 영상에서는 다양한 색채를 사용한 것을 분석 결과를 통해 알 수 있었다. ‘머틀 윌슨’은 하류계층의 인물로 ‘데이지 뷰캐넌’과 달리 선명한 색조의 복식을 착용하였다. 2013년 영상은 원작 소설에 명시된 복식의 조형성을 현대적인 요소를 가미해 재 현하였고, 추출한 색채와 설문조사 색채 빈도수 결과와 같은 계열로 조사 되었다. 2001년 영상은 현대적인 의상과 헤어스타일로 원작 <위대한 개츠 비>의 1920년대 재즈시대의 시대고증이 제대로 이루어지지 않았으며, 다른 2개의 영상과 달리 TV시리즈 이므로 비교가 불가능하였다. 2013년 영상 역시 원작 소설에 명시된 복식의 조형성을 재현하였으나, 경제적으로 안정 되어 있고, 자신의 개성표현을 중요시하는 사회적 분위기로 1974년 영상에 비해 명도 채도가 높은 화려한 색채의 복식을 보여주는 반면, 1974년 영상 은 경제가 약화되어 사회적으로 암울한 시기에 제작되어 채도가 탁한 것 을 알 수 있었다. 이와 같은 결과를 본 연구를 통해서 얻었으며 영화에서 극의 흐름을 전 달하는 수단으로 가장 효과적인 방법으로 영화의상의 색이 특정의미를 부 여하였을 때 등장인물의 성격과 심리상태를 알 수 있었고,영화의상과 색 채의 상징성의 상관관계가 있음을 알 수 있었다. 본 연구를 통해 작품에 나타난 색채의 상징적 이미지를 분석하여 영화의 흐름에 미치는 영향에 대해 연구해볼 필요성이 있으며,영화의상 연구의 필요성을 일깨우고,영화의상 디자인뿐만 아니라 뮤지컬,연극 등 공연의 상과 타 장르의 패션 등 다양한 분야에 색채에 대한 가치 인식을 심어주 고 활용범위를 확대하는데 기여할 수 있을 것을 기대해 본다. (영문초록)[영문] Film, one of the mediums of media, is a form of visual expression used by all the directors to deliver their stories using light and color to the audience. Color, which is the dominant visual information of the film, is the first thing that the audience sees from the screen. Color predicts the plot of the story as well as the historical background and expresses the characteristics of the film such as the occupations, personalities, and psychological states of the characters in the film. With this in mind, the directors have great interests in color because it is a crucial element to express symbolic meanings within the film. As the corset that was worn to emphasis waist for almost 1000 years and women started to advance to the society due to the war, it is necessary to research the clothing of the 1920s because it was the turning point of the clothing becoming modernistic as convenience and minimalism defines the present clothing. These elements of clothing are well portrayed in the novel “The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald of not only the clothing from the 1920s, but also the society and culture at that time. The purpose of this research is to draw a correlation between the colors shown in the film “Great Gatsby” and what they each symbolize and research about film costumes. “The Great Gatsby” a novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald that displays the American society of the 1920s displays, in the film, the clothing of the upper class people in a luxurious party every night to find the parted lover again. It shows the conflict between the upper class and the lower class, entertainment, crimes, obscene, and corrupted people in a loud and distressed 1920s America’s “Last Generation” and “American Dream” that are keen and meticulously drawn in the film. The research compares five main characters from the film “The Great Gatsby” (2013) by Baz Luhrmann, with the different versions that were produced back in 2001 and 1974 to draw the distributions of colors and what they symbolize. Also, a survey was taken in what the people drew of the images of each character by their costume colors. This research analyzed color extraction and color image and their similarities based on the film “The Great Gatsby” of the 2013 version, the 1974 version, 2001 television footages and surveys. The method of analysis was reconstructed in four steps of composition from the original story’s development and the formativeness of the clothing compared in three films by the characters. Color databases were made with ‘L*a*b*’ values and the KS systematic color names and the theory of the symbolism of colors and comparison analysis results were proven with the surveys. The result of the research is as followed: ‘Nick Carraway’ who is the narrator of the story, has a role of coming in harmony with other characters and his dominant brown and violet color tone matched with such symbolic image. Jay Gatsby, the main character, had reproduced the exact color tone listed in the novel in all three films, which gave significance to the clothing. “Tom Buchanan” who is a contrasting person with the main character, is displayed in dark tone in the 2013 film, but in 2001 and 1974 version, most of his clothing is expressed in bright grey tone regardless of the symbolism but the fact that the background setting of the film was summer. “Daisy Buchanan,” the main female character, wore pale tone dress to display the images of adorableness and romance and in the 2001 version diverse color tones were used. “Myrtle Wilson” is a lower class character and unlike “Daisy Buchanan,” she wore vivid tone clothing. In the 2013 version, the clothing has been reproduced from the formativeness of the original novel mixed with modern aspects and the extracted color tone and the survey results of color tone frequency displayed the same color tone. In the 2001 version, the original jazz period and background research were not expressed effectively by the use of modern costumes and hair styles and because it was a television series, the comparison was invalid with the other two films. The 2013 version also reproduced the formativeness of the clothing according to the original novel, but because of the stabilized economy and the society where expression of individuality was becoming important, it showed clothing in fancy color tone with high contrast. In 1974 version, because it was produced during the depression period, the color tone was found murky. With this research, symbolism of colors in film can be analyzed to find out what effects it has on the flow of the film and also promote new researches on film costumes to inculcate and contribute greater usage and knowledge of the importance of colors in not only in the film costumes but also in musical and theatre performances as well as other genres in fashion.
