(영문초록)[영문 The sense of catastrophe, which historically has been considered as an “end and a new start,” is now at a crossroads between two contradictory perspectives. One is considering it as a repetitive awareness of time, and another is seeing it as a loss of apocalyptic idealism of a “new start” and leaving only the hopelessness of the end of the world. In other words, catastrophe is immanent when it’s imminent. If this is the case, we have to clearly define what constitutes people’s sense of catastrophe before suggesting a political solution for it. This dissertation looks into how the ambivalent views of catastrophe develop in films, which are the cultural practice of the social consciousness of the people of the time. In order to do this, this dissertation looks at catastrophic sense in films and examines using Raymond Williams’ concept of “structures of feeling.” According to Williams, a structure of feeling primarily applies to the emergent elements rather than the dominant in art. Therefore, in this age where capitalism is still the dominant structure, catastrophic sense could be defined as an important emergent element that goes against capitalism’s idea of progress without cease. This dissertation analyzes how feelings related to catastrophe are revealed in films that have relevant catastrophic sense as an important element. In Chapter Ⅱ, before analyzing the catastrophic structures of feeling, it discusses preceding discourses of catastrophe and a detailed explanation of the theory of ‘structures of feeling.’ It starts from the religious eschatology, which is the root of the catastrophe discourses, and carry on to the modern view, where politics emerge with the idea of a religious eschatology. It also explores the genealogy of the left wing political theology which was originated from the political appropriation of the revolutionary nature of demise. Also, it looks at how catastrophe is used by the moderates as a rhetoric of today’s general risk. This leads to the specific aspects of catastrophic events, which determines the current catastrophe discourses. Along with the preceding catastrophe discourses and the conditions of current catastrophes, at the end of Chapter 2, it discusses its importance in cultural theory and the methodological usefulness of the concept of structures of feeling. In Chapter Ⅲ, analyses of how catastrophic feeling is built as a structure in current films are provided. Each clause argues specific form of films related to catastrophe; Apocalyptic film as a representation of catastrophe, narrative of one-man in distress as a allegory, and pathology film as a symptom. It shows that the dominant catastrophic feelings of ‘anxiety’ and ‘yearning for redemption’ sometimes compromise with dominating ideology and sometimes placed within the dominant value maintaining its subversive possibility. In the course of that, the structure of feeling uses dual strategy of choosing both dominant and subversive perspectives but at the same time not choosing anything. And it is also transposed to certain symptoms such as melancholia and psychopathy. Although the sense of catastrophe witnessed in the cultural process is making fissures among the dominant social values, still the capitalism, modernity, and humanism are the three key values that have incomparable influence upon modern society. In Chapter Ⅳ, in order to estimate the possibility lying beyond catastrophe, films depicting environmental, science technological, and political-economic catastrophe are argued respectively through theories of Deep Ecology, critical post-humanism, and “Multitude” in post-Fordist era. It provides realistic episteme about what comes next and extended catastrophic thinking that surpasses the transitional sense of catastrophe witnessed in this period.
