(영문초록)This dissertation was started from the documentary 〈Out: Smashing Homophobia Project〉(2007), the second installation in the feminist video activism WOM's homophobia eradication project. This documentary film is composed of three omnibus documentaries shot by three lesbians in their teens who are currently struggling with their sexual identities. For all three girls, the cameras that they hold in their hands become means to voice issues that they cannot easily share with others. Lee Young, the film-maker of this documentary supported their making films and advised on finding their sexual identities. Lee Young is an adviser rather than a film-maker or a director in a process of making this documentary. It is natural that most of documentaries' practice of separating the film-maker and the filmed; the film-maker is subject as invisible controller while the person or group filmed are objects of spectacle. On the other hand, the relationship between the subject and the object of the film in 〈Out: Smashing Homophobia Project〉 is becoming partners engaged in hohzontal dialogue with people who want to make their existence visible and make their voices heard through the documentaries. WOM collaborated with three lesbians in their teens on making this documentary, and they became producers and film-makers of their own self documentary. "Participatory production process" means entire process including planning, production, and distribution(screening and reaching audiences) which participated the subject of the documentary film with the object. Through this kind of participation in production process, the object of the film can be the subject. Participatory production process is a kind of mode of production based the relationship of the subject and the object of documentaries. Through the participatory production process, the social others of communities who have been marginalized by mass media power can be the subjects of the media. Participatory production process merits attention in terms of the trend of the Korean independent documentary which emphasizes individual's memory and daily experiences without extending to social and political issues. Although the development of digital technology allows everyone to make their own voices through new media, making social minorities' existence visible and make their voices heard through media are still limited. In terms of this media environments and situations, participatory production process shows the possibility that social minorities can be voice their own and connect to social movement. In the history of Korean independent documentaries, this similar mode of production has been tried. 〈Sangge-dong Olympic〉(1988), which Kim Dong-Won made while living with the residents who were fighting to keep their homes and Byun Young-Joo's trilogy on the so-called 'comfort women'(women who were forced into sexual slavery for the Japanese military army during Japan's colonization of Korea) 〈The Murmuring〉(1993-2000) can be regarded as the prototype of the participatory production process. Kim Dong-Won became a member of the community and made the film while living with the community. Byun Young-Joo became comfort women's supporter, friend and even substitute granddaughter and the presence of the camera became a part of their daily life and environment. Within the intimate relationship between film-makers and social others filmed, their relationships developed into the partners of making documentaries. The change of the relationship of the two brings about the change of a film-maker's position and emergence of new subject of film making. These films toured college campuses and communities across the nation and contributed to inscribing the issues in the popular consciousness. 〈Out: Smashing Homophobia Project〉 trying to reach audiences with subjects filmed distinguishes from recent Korean documentaries. It is possible for three lesbians in their teens and the film-maker in her early thirties to heal their hurts in the process of discussing with audiences and showing in front of public. Even though finishing completion the documentary film, WOM conducted a workshop on making films for lesbians in their teens, so they can be a lesbian video activists. 〈Out: Smashing Homophobia Project〉 shows the hierarchy between the subject and object of the documentary collapse and it becomes impossible to distinguish between the two. Rather than remaining in a subject-object relationship, they become subjects and partners in creating meaning through documentary films.
