- Description
(영문초록)[영문초록] My thesis focuses on the challenging point that Cindy Sherman's work makes, which follows the tradition of inquires gender identity through the artist's self-portrait. With this acknowledgement, it is remarkable to note how Sherman succeeded in a time of post-industrial patriarchy. Untitled Film Stills, Sherman's first series, announced her entrance into the art world and drew October's attention instantaneously. The female stereotypes she portrays met with the approval of postmodern art ciritics because they upset modernist values of originality and authorship. Nevertheless, Sherman's stills show only female images. Aspects of sexual difference 'were overlooked by both deconstructionist critics and male-centered art system in their critique of her stills. In her works, the importance of sexual difference was illuminated by feminist critics. However, the subject and body of artist that form the whole basis of Sherman's work still have been disregarded. In order to examine gender identity, one should approach Sherman's works, keeping in mind the sexual difference view and the context of the artist's exploring gender identity through self transformation. Therefore, the scope of this study is limited from Untitled Film Stills to History Portraits in which Sherman exists as both subject and object. Disasters has been excluded in which Sherman disappears completely from the forefront of her works. Stills are closely related to promoted photo medium and body art dealing with gender matter. Photography has been accepted as art medium as it documents dematerialization tendencies and performance art. Deconstructionist critics observed that plurality and reproduction of the photo contrast the value of modernism which elevated photography from its documenting function to a major postmodern art medium. The female stereotypes Sherman represent are based on these characters. With the 1960-70s' sexual liberation movement, the main themes found in body art overcame dualistic gender division and shed light on the oppressed female identity. Controversy around performance art by women artists persisted because representation of the female body remains as the object of male's gaze under patriarchy. In spite of this dilemma, Sherman investigated gender identity by creating personas of female stereotypes and appropriating styles of mass media that stimulate male's gaze. The female stereotypes Sherman in her series represent a constructed identity within a post-industrial patriarchy. In Untitled Film Stills, Screen-Rear Projections, Centerfolds and Pink Robes, female stereotypes, which provide visual pleasure with men, are used. On the other hand, female monstrous stereotypes, which terrify men, are used in Fashion and Fairy Tales. Both extremely exaggerated femininity and monstrosity are only constructed identities by patriarchy. Sherman exposes their fictitiousness by masquerading her subjects and objects as stereotypes. Bipolar images, that show patriarchal desire and suppression, exist in History Portraits. The ideal and grotesque correspond with each other in view of their isolation from reality. Neither depicts authentic femininity. Sherman's portrait succeeded in her self-transformation with photography reflecting post-industry and mass media identity. The gender identity Sherman examines here can be distinguished from multi-identities surpassing dualistic gender definition. While Sherman represents the female body persistently, she exists both as the male position as the author-subject and the female as the image-object. Therefore, it can be said that Sherman's examination of gender identity through her works opened the door for other women artists to explore identity through self body in order to overcome how women have been represented under a system of patriarchy.
