(논문요약)[국문초록] 애니메이션 제작에서의 새로운 표현영역의 개발은 소재의 다양화를 가능케 하며 스토리라인과 내러티브의 강화를 가져옴으로써 시나리오의 한계 영역을 넓히게 한다. 본 작품 'Voices from the East'에서는 선의 강약에 의해 평면적, 상징적인 의미를 창조하는 동양화의 수묵화 기법을 35mm 필름의 프레임에 응용하였다. 즉 선을 필름 막면에 직접 긁어서 표현함으로써, 새로운 애니메이션 제작 기법을 실험하였다. 이것은 필름 스크래치 애니메이션을 통하여 동양화의 기법과 동양사상의 개념을 나타내려는 시도였다. ‘Voices from the East'는 하늘과 땅이 서로 통하여 만물을 생성하고 키워내며 순환하여 모든 만물이 발전한다는 음양의 조화와, 木, 火, 土, 金, 水의 오행의 특수한 氣가 우주 만물의 원천을 이루고 있다는 음양오행사상을 소재로 하였으며, 동양화에서 나타나는 평면적, 상징적, 정신적 사상을 새로운 매체에서 생동감 있게 표현하고자 하였다. 배경음악은 동양적인 정서를 세계적인 음악으로 완성했다는 평가를 받고 있는 양방언(Yang, Bang-Ean)의 'frontier'를 사용하였다. 본 작품연구를 통한 전통적 사상과 새로운 미디어를 접목한 시도는 또다른 미학적 가치를 생산하였다. 스크래치의 거친 획들로 표상화된 형상들과 생생하게 드러나는 선의 관념성 등이 동양적 가치관과 심미안을 표현할 수 있다는 가능성을 보여준 것이다. (영문초록)[영문초록] Development of the new expression to produce an animation may strengthen the diversification of the theme, storyline and narrative, and extend the boundaries of representation that exists in the scenario. In this work, 'Voices from the East', the new animation technique has been experimented by applying that of the black and white drawing in the Oriental painting which creates the plane and symbolic meaning through the strength and weakness of the lines, and by scratching the lines directly on the frame of the 35 mm film. This Film Scratch Animation is an attempt to represent the Oriental painting technique and the spirit of the Eastern Ideas. The material for the 'Voices from the East' has been selected based on the five elements (metal, wood, water, fire and earth) that says the special vitality of those elements are the origin of all the things in the universe, and the principles of Um and Yang that says all things under the sun are developed through 1;he communication of the heaven and the earth by creating, cultivating and circulating them. Also, I tried to express the plane, symbolic and spiritual ideas of the oriental painting with vitality in this work. For the background music, I used 'frontier' by Yang Bang Eon who is evaluated as the one who accomplished the Oriental emotion as a world music. Through the project thesis that was an attempt to represent traditional oriental idea with the strange medium, scratch animation, new aesthetical possibilities of expression has been founded. Forms and ideality made by strokes in the film 'Voices from the East' show the result.
