- (논문요약)[영문초록] This thesis will give consideration on circumstance of theatrical animation production field. Also give a chance to check out inherent problems and see how the problems are occurred and could be solved. This thesis is based on the experience of producing a theatrical animation 'Audition'. The original story of a theatrical animation 'Audition' is from a cartoon book 'Audition' written by Cheon, Gye-young. The original Audition is a very well known and popular cartoon book that is sold about 120,000 copies. Even though the original story was very popular, it was very difficult to secure production cost for the theatrical animation 'Audition'. Therefore, it took approximately 10 years to complete producing the animation. This reflects inferior conditions of producing a theatrical animation in Korea. Producing a theatrical animation, it is not often which a production company invests cash for production cost itself. Generally, financial investors invest cash for total of production cost. Some times investors raise fund or establish a consortium. After distribution, the investors retrieve their investment first, then, shares net profit with the production company. Occasionally a production company invests actual articles instead of cash. Maybe it is because of inferior condition of a production company or field. But, also we should indicate the lack of understanding on characteristics of animation industry of financial investors and their uneasiness about retrieving investment. Additionally, non-efficient supporting policy from government results in scattering out subsidies in small amount, thus, it is very limited to get successful outcome. Cash investment from financial investors did not exceed 30% of total production cost for the animation 'Audition'. It included a financial support from government side. Rest of 70% was from the production company, Lascaux. Many theatrical animations couldn't complete its production because they failed to attract investment for production. Even though they attracted investment including a government financial support for pre-production, projects had to stop if they didn't secure investment for the rest of process. If the production company didn't make its own investment on 'Audition', the animation might stop its production as well. As I was aware of this situation very much, I judged that it can not reach the break even point if Audition was targeting only domestic market. Therefore, I decided to extend its market to Japan and release Audition in Korea and Japan simultaneously. I brought Japanese animation staffs and musicians. Although attracting investment didn't go well, I could see a possibility of success. Audition is the first girl-cartoon based theatrical music animation. Most of music involved animations are musical kind. To seek ways to differentiate from other music animations, Audition introduces a pop music band and let main characters sing and play music in the band. I allocated big budget for music as compared with other animations. Music director wrote various music and famous musicians performed for Audition. Based on all this effort, Audition got a well-made original sound track. This thesis describes last 10 years of producing the animation Audition from the first meet of the cartoon book 'Audition' to attracting investment. It includes a very early plan, process of casting Japanese musicians and preparing production, event of production announcement, signing contract with musicians, main production, post production, and etc. The thesis also shows problems and distinct characteristics of a theatrical animation production process, and difficulties of each process. I wish this thesis helps people to understand the circumstance of a theatrical animation production in domestic.
