- Description
- (논문요약)[영문] ABSTRACT The success of the South Korean film industry under neoliberalism has materialized through carefully strategized calculations made by the state and national conglomerates, the film industry's oligopolies. Following this successful consolidation the industry has saturated the nation's screen with ultra-nationalist films that conceal contradictions arising from radical changes in the economy and the country's colonized past. The industry leaders control the "nation space" by suppressing other viewpoints in and about the nation. Auteur Park Chan-wook's emergence, helped by the consolidated oligopolies, propelled the national film industry into the global market when he won the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival in 2004. However, Park's Vengeance Trilogy(2002-2005) subvert the industry practice by complicating audience expectation accustomed to the oligopolies' ultra-nationalistic narratives. Park tunrs to us, the audience, to critically reconsider messages in the-oligopolies' films made for mass consumption.
