(논문요약)[국문초록] 춘향전은 작품성과 대중성을 고루 갖춘 우리 민족에게 가장 사랑받는 영원한 고전이다. 또한 춘향전은 어느 한 사람의 창작물이 아닌, 오랜 세월 동안 다수의 생산자에 의해 창조된, 개방적, 유동적(流動的), 적층적(積層的) 성격을 띠고 있으며, 여전히 창조적 계승을 계속하는 미완성의 현재 진행형 예술이다. 따라서 설화로부터 시작하여 판소리를 거쳐 소설로, 다시 창극이나 오페라 또는 무용극, 영화, TV드라마로 시대의 흐름에 따라 자연스럽게 분화, 진화하여 왔다. 본 논문은 영상화라는 또 한번의 적층적 발전을 통해, 포괄적 의미의 춘향전이 현대적으로 도약, 승화할 수 있는 가능성을 모색해 보는데 의의가 있다. 이런 관점에서 소설 「춘향전」이나 판소리 「춘향가」가 영상물 <춘향전>으로 매체 전이되면서, 매체 특성이나 영화 작가의 해석, 세계관 등에 따라 변환되는 여러 측면들을 고찰해 보고, 원전 「춘향전」과 영상물 <춘향전> 사이, 또 각 영상물들 간의 차이점과 유사성을 다음과 같은 차원에서 비교 분석하였다. 첫째, 영상화되면서 내러티브 구조(Narrative structure)는 어떻게 변형되었으며, 판소리나 소설과의 차이점은 무엇인가. 그리고 영상화의 결과물들은 구조면에서 서로 어떻게 다른가. 등장 인물들의 캐릭터는 영상화 과정에서 어떻게 성격화(characteri-zation)되었고 동일화, 입체화, 복합화 하는가. 둘째, 영상화 과정을 거치면서 시간과 공간의 문제들은 원전으로부터 어떻께 변화되었으며, 시공간 차원에 있어 영상물 <춘향전>들 상호간에는 각각 어떤 차이가 있는가. 셋째, 영상물 <춘향전>의 스타일은 서로 어떻게 다르며, 어떻게 변화해 왔는가. 매체 전이에 따라 또는 각 영화의 스타일에 따라, 주제와 그 구현에 있어서 어떤 점들이 다른가. 위와 같은 연구 과제들을 수행하는데 있어, 내러티브에 있어서는 시모어 채트먼(Seymour Chatman)의 내러티브 이론, 전통적 내러티브 영화의 리얼리즘의 컨벤션(convention)의 토대위에서 비교 분석하였으며, 캐릭터에 있어서는 소설과 영화의 캐릭터 차이, 성격화의 방법, 관객에 의한 캐릭터 재구성 등의 차원에서 분석하였다. 스타일 면에서는 각 영화의 스타일 요소들을 비교 분석하였고, 이를 바탕으로 스타일과 주제의 상호 연관성의 관점에서, 주제의 변화와 성취를 분석하였다. 소설 「춘향전」이나 판소리 「춘향가」는 적층성, 개방성, 유동성의 특질을 가진 집단 창작물이다. 이것은 독자나 관객과 같이 만들어 가는 예술이라는 의미다. 영화화된 <춘향전>은 원전이, 장르나 그 수에 있어 다양할 뿐 아니라, 원전 자체가 현재도 적층되고, 유동하는 미완성의 예술이다. 영화 작가의 해석과 세계관도 다양하다. 관객이 원전을 잘 알고 있으며, 관객 또한 원전의 현재 진행형 변화와 적층에 참여하고 있는 공동 작가다. 본 논문의 연구결과는 영상물 <춘향전> 또한 적층성, 개방성, 유동성을 지닌, 관객과 영화 작가가 같이 만들어 가는 열린 텍스트임을 보여 준다. 시대의 흐름과 이에 따른 관객의 취향변화나 삶의 패턴의 변화, 정신 세계의 변화 등은 원전에 대한 사회적 해석의 변화를 수반하며, 이것이 영화 작가의 역량과 합해져 하나의 영상물 <춘향전>이 만들어진다. 결론적으로 영화화된 <춘향전>들에 있어, 시대의 흐름에 따라 영화 작가의 해석과 세계관, 관객의 몫인 사회적 해석이 변화하였고, 이에 따라 해석 방식도 변화하였으며 결국 내러티브도, 스타일도, 주제도 각기 다르게 나타났다. 또 앞으로도 새롭게 나타날 것이다. 그리고 새롭게 발전할 것이다. (영문초록)[영문초록] Chunhyang-j.n (the story of Chunhyang) is the traditional classic that Koreans have loved most due to its artistic merit and popular appeal. It has not been written by only one genius, but has been being created by a number of story- tellers with their each embellishment and addition to it through the long history. Moreover currently it has been still under the creative procedure of succession by way of multiple genre transformation, diversion and evolution from the legend (the narrative literature) to Pansori, novel, opera, the film and TV featuring drama. Many of artworks transformed from the original legendary Chunhyang-j.n obviously have much in common among themselves. At the same time they have the divergences. Therefore this study focuses on the transformation and the evolution from traditional legendary classic to the visualized modern arts, the film Chunhyang-j.n, observing the changes in the distinguishing characteristics of each genre-transformed Chunhyang-j.n, the directors interpretations of the original, the thought of times and the senses of values. This study applies following three aspects referring to in the comparison research. A: What does the narrative structure of the original Chunhyang-j.n result in while being transformed into the visualized work? And what are the differences from Pansori and the novel? B: How did the each genre-transformed Chunhyang-j.n (especially, the visualized one) solve the issue of times and places? And what differences come up from the original? C: How many of divergences reveal among the many of the films, Chunhyang-j.n despite being based on the same original? And how much differ in terms of the film style, the theme of the movie and its expression? To sum up, the films or movies Chunhyang-j.n (the visualized works) is still an open and collective creation not only by the directors but also by audience. In some senses, they take part in this artistic visualizing work together, due to the intrinsic features of the legend, Chunhyang-j.n, the openness, the flexibility and the accumulation. With the change of the times, the directors interpretation of the original Chunhyang-j.n and their views of world have also changed as well as the audiences appreciation. These changes accompany the changes in the method of interpretation, leading to the diversification in the narrative structure, the film style and the theme. And the result of this study imply that new changes in various parts of Chunhyang-j.n may come up in future, too even though its original is a traditional classic.
