Description
(영문초록)[영문초록] 'The end of the world,' a material that stimulates human fear as well as curiosity, has been used in many stories including novels and films. Post-apocalypse is a sub-genre of SF that uses as its background the future world destroyed or fallen into anarchy due to a large-scale disaster like a nuclear war. Films of this genre set the total catastrophe leading mankind to the end as a phenomenon that has already happened in the past, and narrate a myth of the reconstruction of civilization through a small number of people who have survived and adapted themselves for the new world where everything established by mankind has collapsed. In addition, showing the world after the end, they make the present world past legends and express futility and loneliness from the absence of human beings. Heroes in the world are charged with the mission to lead mankind to new development and revival. However, post-apocalypse films produced since the 2000s raise the question, ‘If the world has come to an end due to the mistake of existing civilized society, is it meaningful to reconstruct the past civilization and repeat the past customs?‘ and suggest a new direction for actions to be taken by heroes. The direction turns away from the meaning of salvation limited within the frame of civilization, and aims at post-civilization salvation. That is, it regards civilization itself as an instrument for past rulers to wield their power and gratify their lust and as an object to be eradicated for hopeful future. This can be associated with post-colonialism that criticizes the concept of civilization as intellectual violence for advocating colonial rule. This study uses mythological and semiological analysis methods in order to explain ideological meanings narrated in post-apocalypse films produced since the 2000s. The analysis of narrative structure through mythology is a method for identifying basic values and ideas prevalent in society through myths reflected in a film. Because a myth reflects the sociality and ideology of the world where the myth was born, as long as we can find a myth to be analyzed, we may derive ideological meanings from the myth. Semiological analysis is effective in understanding meaning generation structure among paragraphs through finding denotations and connotations contained in screen images and the relation between objects and spaces, and therefore, it can analyze semantic structure inherent in each object in connection to other mythological analysis methods. Like myths, films reflect ideologies or values in the corresponding days. In particular, SF films deal with historical technologies or phenomena as important materials. In post-apocalypse films as well, the described world view or the image of heroes demanded in the world is different according to historical background. Thus, if the mythological structure and semiological meanings of post-apocalypse films produced since the 2000s are studied, we may find the image of heroes and ideologies pursued newly in the 21st century.
