Description
(논문요약)[영문초록] This thesis aims at investigating the standardization process of 35mm film format in Korean movies. It attempts to reinterpret according to the film technology history and relevant historical facts, based upon the previous studies on the period in which the 35mm film format was standardized in 1956. In addition, I examined the uniqueness and significance of the standardization in Korean movies. This thesis study deals with the periods from 1947 to 1961; the former year marked the appearance of 16mm commercial movies for the first time in history while the latter year referred to the inactivation of the 16mm format, excluding the 35mm film format. It also include the last period of Japanese occupation in Korea in the subject matter in order to examine the causes that the 16mm film making was not performed even in tragic situation of colonial rule by Japan. According to the results, the standardization of 35mm film format in Korean movies was shown to be explained by a wide range of factors. After the warfare in history, the factors such as smooth distribution of films, tax exemption measures for Korean movies, success of the movie "Chunhyangjeon", film screening format required by theaters such as Sigonggwan in Myeongdong, entry format required by foreign film festivals, and special privilege measures for Korean movies and enactment of film law. Moreover, the facts such as 35mm sound movie making and inflows of western-style movie theaters and film making equipments had an impact on the standardization process in terms of technical factors. Most importantly, however, the cultural factor that film makers, distributors, and audiences and fans alike preferred 35mm format of movies was found to be influential. Together with the factors having an impact on the standardization, the study also reveals that there existed two more periods, which were the disappearance period for 16mm film format (1961) and transition period for 35mm period up to the completion of screening system (early 1970s) respectively, other than the 35mm standardization period (1956) which was dealt with in previous studies. I expect the study may contribute to the field of Korean film technology history, and it may play a leading role in encouraging further in-depth researches as well as exploring the Korean film history and film making technology history in the 1950s, which laid the groundwork for the modernization of Korean movies.
