(논문요약)As the concept of planned film had introduced in early 1990s, Korean film industry entered new phase. <Story about Marriage>(1992), the first planned film in Korea, became a starting point for the conglomerates to fund films and it played crucial role in development of Korean film industry. The planned film is characterized by pre-production stage and it is greatly influenced by a producer who is responsible for it. Everything that is necessary to create a film is organized in pre-production stage. Pre-production is the first step of planned film, and the process includes prevention from accidents, general preparations, and suggestions of practical examinations. The film, <Masquerade>’s pre-production includes three stages, which are beginning, intermediate, and finalizing process. The beginning process of <Masquerade> is composed as writing scenario, creating story board, and estimating budget. <Masquerade> is a faction, the story of Ha-Sun who played the role for the King, Gwang-Hae, and it is motivated by the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty and the historical fiction, The Prince and the Pauper. Since more than 80% of <Masquerade>’s shooting location was already organized in pre-production stage, it made creating storyboard process much easier. While estimating the budget, people most concerned about the <Masquerade>’s characteristic, historical drama, and it was most important to make the greatest effect with the most suitable budget. There were no much error for estimating budget in <Masquerade>, and it performed rank 6 th in a box office record. The intermediate process is composed as gathering staff members, casting actors, and hunting locations. Since no staff member or actors rejected to work with <Masquerade>’s team, the intermediate process was faster than it would have been. The staff members were employed based on the 10 years of their carrier databases. Also, the top choice actors were cast. For preparation, enough time should be provided for staff members and actors. Also, since it is important to gather much information about the location before production, <Masquerade> team spent a month to research about the shooting locations. This process made the production much easier. The finalizing process in pre-production includes checking up on art, shooting, lightings, visual effects, and computer graphics. In order to overcome the restriction of location that is caused by the characteristics of historical drama of the film, <Masquerade>’s art team created a set of ‘Bo-Kyung_Dang’, which is the major shooting location of film. Also <Masquarade> was sponsored to utilize the antique objects that cost more than a billion wons. and the art team devoted themselves to reemerge JoSeon Dynasty through pictures, costumes, and accessaries. The lighting team created the JoSeon’s lamplights for effective lighting, especially at midnight through out many experiments. Because <Msquerade>’s pre-production was well-prepared, it received tech prize at DeJong Film Festival in 2012. The well-organized pre-production process in <Masquerade> not only made smooth progress in production but also it affected its post-production and marketing. Well established film making process provided a room for staff member and others to concentrate on the film production. As a result, <Masquerade> gathered 12,323,555 audience in movie theater, which ranked 6 th in box office. This research informs the importance of pre-production and It suggests effective and successful ways of film’s pre-production that can greatly influence the general film production process. Also, this research will become a important data since there are not many researches about pre-production process and this will contribute to development of Korean film industry.
