Description
(영문초록)[영문] This paper investigates the change in the vertical structure of the Korean film industry and its impacts on the foreclosing behavior of the movie theaters. In Korea, all three major theater chains has been integrated with distributors until one of them sold its affiliated theater chain in 2007. With daily screening schedule date from 2004 to 2010, I employ a two-way Difference-in-Difference method in order to analyze both the favoritism toward the movies of its own distributor and the foreclosure against the movies of the rival distributors. The estimation results show the existence of the favoritism toward the movies of its own distributor. However, after one movie theater chain became vertically disintegrated and independent, the favoritism of the integrated theater toward the movies of its distributor became more or less weakened. That is, while one integrated movie theater’s favoritism has been reduced, the other’s has not changed much. Furthermore, the disintegrated movie theater does no longer have the favoritism toward the movie of its former distributor. This implies that the vertical separation of one major theater may have contributed to higher consumer welfare. On the other hand, I found some evidence of strategic foreclosure against newly disintegrated firms. Integrated theaters screen even less movies of disintegrated distributor than independently distributed movies. The result is consistent with Fu (2009) and Film (2008), but this paper adds more specifications by investigating the effect of vertical disintegration on the favoritism and the foreclosure behavior.
