Description
(영문초록)[영문] The Korean films were introduced as culture contents to the world through various International Film Festivals and played a huge role in promotion of Korea’s national brand image. As its active push into overseas markets began in the late 1990s for the purpose of making a profit, Korean films became significant in terms of cultural value as well as industrial value. The reason why Korean films expanded rapidly into overseas markets in that period is that domestic film industry environment in that time began to change by establishing a rational structure, the government’s supporting policy for diversity films and films for the global market worked well and a growing influx of quality talent into film industry led to the industrial growth in quality. The artistic merit of the Korean films made in this period began to be appreciated by people around the world as they were invited to various International Film Festivals. At the same time, as Korean film industry was given a chance expand into overseas market, it achieved both qualitative and quantitative growths. Once people around the world started having higher expectations of Korean films, however, the average production cost increased and, ironically, exportation of the films became necessary for market expansion. Whereas Korean films went through continuous growth in its quality by being constantly invited to International Film Festivals, Korean films tended to produce similar to one another starring specific actors or actresses who had box-office appeal and fame in a few territories in order to make a profit. As a result, those movies failed and exportation of Korean films sharply dropped. As the domestic film market underwent a change and, finally, reached a plateau, Korean film industry needed to change the overseas film market expansion strategy. In this period, the film that presented another possibility was <The Housemaid>. This film was differentiated from others that it had diverse marketing points as auterurism film, also possibly could distribute as a commercial film. So far many Korean films tended to have been distributed overseas by being categorized as either an art house film or a commercial film, but <The Housemaid> was a representative film that blurred the lines between the director driven, art house film and the commercial film and showed the possibility of Korean art films’ commercial success in overseas market. Through various overseas marketing methods, the film brought both cultural success (marketing through International Film Festival) and commercial success (making profit through International Sales). Thus, the case study on <The Housemaid> will be helpful to consider and employ distinguished overseas marketing strategies for Korean films. Behind the success of <The Housemaid>, there were industrial and political supports. When the film was being made, diversity was successfully preserved in the film production environment so that an art house films could be produced on the same scale as a commercial films. In addition, the government, being flexible to changes in the overseas market, encouraged overseas expansion and did its best to maximize domestic and overseas revenue by mediating the time for distribution considering the Secondary distribution which includes DVD and New Media market for the films. In light of government policy, there were various support projects to promote overseas expansion and sales, also cooperation with other organization and support in order to protect the copyrights and against the illegal loss of the rights. Government’s efforts and supports for the film industry and its related policies will foster sustained growth in Korean films’ overseas expansion, and construction and activation of national brand. Korean film industry encounters yet another change. Recently, it seems that an environment which facilitates the production of auterism, director driven films which establish a brand in overseas market or diverse project films is not easy to create in the Korean film industry and, as a result, the polarization of films is becoming more distinct. Regarding the current situation and changes of Korean film industry, therefore, Korean film overseas expansion policies must be taken into careful consideration.
