- Description
(영문초록)[영문] The period when films were introduced and films were produced for the first time in South Korea overlaps the Japanese colonial period. The Japanese colonial rule that lasted from 1910 to 1945 censored Chosun culture so as to annihilate Chosun’s ethnicity, which means that the films of colonized Chosun also could not be free from Japanese censorship. Japan carried out various policies in order to monitor the films of colonized Chosun from 1907, and by proclaiming ‘Chosun Film Decree’ in 1940, it started its intensive film censorship. Japan carried out systematic, official censorship of Chosun films through the Chosun Film Decree, which exerted its influence in many different fields including the matters regarding the production of films: e.g. mandatory showing of propaganda films. Accordingly, the films produced during the time had a noticeable tendency of propaganda films, and for this reason, they have been defined as pro-Japanese films. Not confined to the conventional perspective from which the films of colonized Chosun between 1940 and 1945 were defined only pro-Japanese films, this study attempts a post-colonial reading by discovering the traces of coercion and resistance along with the trace of cooperation found the films. Post-colonialism refers to an attempt to deconstruct the ruling ideology infused in the ruled in a colonial society, which is a discussion that should precede in a study on a colonial culture. Thus, prior to full-scale research, this study summarized theoretical discussions on post-colonialism and in addition, it looked into the films of colonized Chosun during the 1940s in the context of social conditions by summarizing the flow of the films and film censorship policy. As the subjects of this study, four films, Spring in the Korean Peninsula , Volunteer , Homeless Angel and Straits of Chosun were selected among the films of colonized Chosun produced after the enforcement of the Chosun Film Decree (1940), which were excavated in 2004 by the Korean Film Archive, and narrative structures and texts of the films were analyzed from the post-colonialist perspective. In the analysis of the narrative structures, the ruling ideology of Japan commonly implied in the narrative structures of the films was analyzed while primarily, how the use of Japanese language and the Hwangguksinminhwa policy (Turning Koreans into the Japanese Imperial Subjects) had been reflected was analyzed through an analysis of cinematic signs and symbolic signs analysis in the analysis of the texts,. In addition, based on the films of colonized Chosun, this study attempted to discover the trace of the ruler’s coercion and the trace of resistance of the ruled inherent in cinematic signs and symbolic signs. This study could read the films of colonized Chosun between 1940 and 1945 from the post-colonialist perspective as follows: First of all, the ruling ideology of Japan found through the analysis of the narrative structures was that there is a dichotomous perspective on Chosun and Japan. The common narrative structure of Spring in the Korean Peninsula , Volunteer , Homeless Angel and Straits of Chosun is that the crisis had been caused by Chosun and Chosun culture and that the resolution of the crisis came from the help of Chosun people who imitated Japan, Japanese things and Japanese people. This perspective inherent in the films fixes the difference between the ruler and the ruled along with the justification of Japan's colonial occupation of Korea by describing Chosun as savage, lousy and inferior being and Japan as civilized, advanced and excellent being present. In addition, as a result of an analysis of the use of Japanese language appearing in the films of colonized Chosun between 1940 and 1945 through the analysis of the texts, it was found that the use of Japanese language increased more than the use of Korean. Also, it was found that the Hwangguksinminhwa accept rather than it was their spontaneous acceptance. This means that their ostensible cooperation with the ruler appearing in the films of colonized Chosun resulted from the setting of the social situation rather than their spontaneous will. Based on this, this study attempted to find the traces of coercion and the traces of resistance of the ruled in the films of colonized Chosun through cinematic signs and symbolic signs. As a result, this study found the traces of coercion caused by the ruler as follows: first, unilateral mission given to the subjects of the Japanese empire ( Spring in the Korean Peninsula ); second, Chosun people showing double-sided expressions of the same matter ( Volunteer ); third, the appearance of a scene in which characters are taking the Oath of Imperial Subjects, which is awkward on the narrative ( Homeless Angel ); and fourth, the Hwangguksinminhwa policy that ruled over Chosun people’s daily life ( Straits of Chosun ). Also, the traces of resistance made by the filmmakers of colonized Chosun as the ruled were found through offers of better social opportunities ( Spring in the Korean Peninsula ) or Chosun females’ hybridity ( Volunteer ). In sum, it was found that through the above analyses, all four films imply both the code of cooperation with the ruler and the code of resistance that could be actively expressed.
