- Description
- Objectives and Action Plan of the Coalition for Cultural Diversity,Action Plan Summary,At the domestic level,At the internatinal lever,Missin Statement,Cultural policy must not be subject to the constraints of international trade agreenents,1-The proposals recently submitted by the United States to the WTO and FTAA make clear the country’s firm intention to have culture and cultural policy included in these trade negotiations,2-By insisting that “culture be put on the table” in the trade negotiations, the United States is doing nothing other than protectiong its economic interests-There is nothing surprising in that,3-Because of the important social role they play, cultral goods and sevices are not like other commidities and cannot be senn in econimic be seen in economic terms alone,4-Only a broad range of cultural expressin that truly mirrors the diversity of each society and of the rest of the world can enable culture to fully play its role in society,5-The cultural policies set by countries are necessary because the free market alone cannot ensure cultural diversity, especially in this era of globalization,6-Many key cultural policies would be dismantled if subjented to the rules that usually govern international trade agreements,7-A broad consensus is forming around the world in support of the right of countries to set and implement their own cultural policies,an essestial part of supporting cultural diversity,8- In the medium term, what is needed is an international accord that defines the principles of cultral diversity and establishes the right of countries to set therir own cultural policies,9- In the short term, countries must refrain from making trad liberalization commitments on culture in all international trade agreenemts,10-The Canadian government’s stand is well known: “Culture is not on the table”. Now it must stand firm agains the U.S pressure that is sure to mount as the FTAA and WTO negotiations progress. 로 구성되어 있음.
