Mi-sun's father was crippled in a car accident. After enduring much of life's hardships living with her husband, Mi-sun's mother leaves town after being falsely accused of adultery. A new stepmother enters their family but she abuses Mi-sun and her younger siblings. Their father dies and their stepmother runs away. Mi-sun does hard labor to take care of her siblings. Mi-sun misses her mother so much that she leaves her siblings with a neighbor and goes looking for her mother. Mi-sun finds her mother in an army base town but she is already the mother of a son of mixed blood whose father is unknown. Mi-sun begs her mother to come back home but her mother takes pains to pretend not to know her. Mi-sun's mother sends Mi-sun off but then she decides to return to her children.
