Synopsis
Shin Dong-su and his family live in Yong-dae Village. They accept poverty as their fate. When a bad crop threatens to starve them, they leave their loving hometown. The family situates themselves in a mining town. But when the Korean War breaks out, the family is separated. They promise to meet again in a year after they've earned money. However, only half their family shows up at the promised rocky mountain path. The family lost three of its children to the war. On the other hand, Dong-su's eldest son, Hyun-sin and Yu-sin continue wandering about before situating themselves in a mining town. There, they hear news of their father, Dong-su. He is in an army hospital in Masan. Instead of the land deed he always carried, Dong-su has lost a leg. Ten years later, Hyun-sin returns to his hometown, Yong-dae Village, and devotes himself to the New Community Movement.
